‘October Miracle:’ Woman’s house broken into, possessions lost; TV spared

While some people plan to come home to a clean home after a tiring work day, one Jonnah, Mississippi, resident opened her front door to a ransacked house.

On Friday, October 13, Jane Darwin had come home to find a flipped couch, removed drawers, and missing valuables. While the homeowner had a security system installed, she says she never used it, because it was a hassle to turn on.

“Something like this has never happened to me like this before,” Darwin says. “The house is now a mess. My rooms are in shambles. You would never guess something like this would happen to you—I just see stories like this on television.”

In a report filed to the Sunshine County Sheriff department by the homeowner, Darwin had reported over $20,000 in missing valuables, including worn H&M apparel, costume jewelry, and a gently-used Michael Jackson’s Thriller on cassette.

What surprised the victim most was that the burglar did not attempt to take Darwin’s most expensive possession, which she says is her 52-inch rear projector television.

“It’s nothing but an October miracle,” Darwin says. “I had bought this TV in 1995 for over $900. I’m just dumbfounded that they didn’t steal it, bust stole everything else. They could have easily turned it around in a pawn shop. It works like new.”

While Darwin is missing many of her possessions, and has a flurry of displaced furniture, her flipped couch had revealed her television’s remote, which has been missing for the last 10 years.

“My father once told me to look at the good in the bad. And, well, now I don’t have to get up from the couch to change the channel anymore.”

Over the last couple of months, the Sunshine County Sheriff department has been overwhelmed with the city’s escalating crime rate.

“What surprises us most is that this is the first crime not related to Law & Order incident, in over a month” Sheriff George Georges says.

The sheriff says he’s not surprised that the thieves didn’t take Darwin’s television.

Darwin’s neighbors declined to comment when asked for an interview.

“These crooks in Jonnah are looking for one thing and one thing only: Law & Order box sets,” Georges says.
